Caring For Children

Course Objectives

• Develop the necessary knowledge and awareness to fulfil the responsibility of caring for children in the home or supervised environment.

• Understand the law and legislative requirements governing the care of children between 0-6 years.

• Promote good practice, equality and diversity within the childcare sector.

• Create and maintain a healthy, hygienic and safe environment for children.

Entry Requirements

• National Vocational Certificate Level 4 OR

• Leaving Certificate or equivalent qualifications and/or relevant life and work experiences.

Course Syllabus

• Health and Safety Legislation

• Assessment of hazards in the Childcare environment

• Provision of appropriate Health & Safety procedures for the Childcare environment.

• Necessary First Aid skills for the Childcare environment (e.g. CPR)

• Effective procedures to deal with an accident or a fire

• Implementation of good hygiene standards (e.g. sterilising equipment and toys)

• Understand the cause and effect of common childhood ailments

• Management of infection within the Childcare setting

• Sudden Infant Death Syndrome

• Importance of appropriate physical activities for children

• Nutritional requirements for babies and older children

• Caring for a child's personal needs: Legislation Requirements

• Appropriate toileting, nappy changing and bathing practices
