Early Childhood Education

Course Objectives

  • Understand the type and stages of play in child development

  • Understand the integrated nature of play and development

  • An ability to plan, implement and evaluate play activities that are appropriate for a child’s development

  • Identify the role and responsibilities of the childcare worker when playing with children


  • Assessment Structure
  • 2 Assignments (30% each) to be completed at home = 60%

  • Skills Demonstration = 40%

Entry Requirements

  • National Vocational Certificate Level 4 OR

  • Leaving Certificate or equivalent qualifications and/or relevant life and work experiences



Course Structure

  • The role of play in overall child development

  • Types, stages and patterns of play for children between 0-6 years

  • Factors influencing children’s play patterns

  • The role of the childcare worker during play activities

  • Supportive play environments

  • Safety standards for play environments

  • Physical Play

  • Manipulative Play

  • Creative Play

  • Promotion of skills and knowledge through play e.g. literacy and communication skills

Learners will receive a FETAC level 5 component cert per module or a major certificate in Childcare after completing all 8 modules
The following 3 modules: Caring for Children, Child Development and Social Studies require students to attend classroom based exams
Classroom exams take place on Saturday or Sunday in Cork or Dublin.
