What is Driver CPC?
Driver CPC is a Certificate in Professional Competence for professional bus and truck drivers. Its purpose is to set and maintain high standards of safety and driving among drivers of trucks and buses. Driver CPC is being introduced in Ireland because a European Union law, Directive 2003/59/EC, states that professional drivers must receive ongoing periodic training.
When will Driver CPC will be introduced in Ireland?
Driver CPC (Certificate in Professional Competence) has been introduced in Ireland since the 10th September 2008 for bus, coach and minibus drivers, and will be introduced on the 10th September 2009 for truck drivers.
Has the RSA granted an extension for Bus Drivers to complete CPC training?
Yes today 4th September 2009 the RSA announced that they have granted an extension to the training period for existing bus drivers. All existing bus drivers were obliged to maintain their Driver CPC qualification by completing their first day of periodic training by the 10th of September 2009.
An extension has been granted to any professional bus driver, who due to pressure of work or for similar reasons has not completed their first day of Driver CPC periodic training by the 10th of September 2009. Any bus driver who has acquired rights to the Driver CPC qualification (those who had their full category D driving licence on or before the 10th of September 2008) and who were obliged to have their first day of training completed before the 10th of September 2009 will be able to maintain their Driver CPC on condition that their first day of periodic training is completed by the 31st of December 2009.
Driver CPC is an ongoing process and as such, any bus driver who avails of this extension is required to have their second day of periodic training completed by the 10th of September 2010 and each subsequent year thereafter.
Please note: any professional driver with acquired rights to both a bus and truck driver CPC is required to maintain both qualifications by:
1. Completing their first day of bus driver CPC periodic training before the 31st of December 2009; and
2. Completing their second day of bus driver CPC periodic training, which will also be their first day of truck driver CPC periodic training by the 10th of September 2010.
Jobseekers who satisfy the criteria for FÁS funding , may be able to attend Chevron Training’s FÁS funded training courses for free, as they will be able to avail of up to 100% funding for the course fee.
