Course Objectives

Provide holistic care for people diagnosed with a life limiting illness in the last days of a person's life.

Communicate effectively with persons with a life limiting illness.

Enhance the quality of life of the person with a life limiting illness.

Recognise and respect the uniqueness of each person's approach to death.

Work effectively as part of the healthcare team

Entry Requirement

• National Vocational Certificate Level 4
  
Or
• Leaving Certificate or equivalent qualifications and/or relevant life and work experiences.

• Working with a Palliative Care Approach
• Philosophy and principles of palliative care
• Roles and responsibilities of specialist palliative care team
• Fears and anxieties
• Coping mechanisms
• Communication skills
• Communicating with the dying person  and their families
• Death and dying
• Person centred approach to the care of the dying person
• Signs and symptoms that death is imminent
• Bereavement care
• Individual patterns of grief
