Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) forms an integral part of any Health & Safety policy.  As portable appliances account for a significant proportion of electrical accidents in Ireland, it is imperative that such appliances are periodically tested to ensure their safe operation.
Regulation 81 of the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations 2007 states that an employer shall ensure, where appropriate, that a competent person:

  • Tests portable equipment
  • Certifies whether or not the portable equipment (including any cables and plugs) was, on the day of test, as far as could be reasonably ascertained, safe and without risk to persons coming into direct or indirect contact with any live part of the equipment.

The Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 states that periodic inspection of portable equipment >125V ac should be undertaken by a competent person.

This legislation defines an individual as a competent person “where having regard to the task he or she is required to perform and taking account of the size or hazards (or both of them) of the undertaking or establishment in which he or she undertakes work, the person possesses sufficient training, experience and knowledge appropriate to the nature of the work to be undertaken”.

Chevron Training, Ireland’s leading training provider, has developed a City and Guilds Accredited Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) training programme which will be beneficial to anyone who undertakes or wishes to undertake Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) in the workplace.
