Solar Energy

Aims: To up-skill candidates with the relevant knowledge and understanding of solar water heating systems. This module is a statement of the standards to be achieved to gain a FETAC credit in Solar Domestic Hot Water Systems at Level 6.

Objective: The objective of this course is to provide a wealth of knowledge on solar water heating systems and to prepare candidates for the official FETAC examination which follows the course which will qualify the candidate upon successful completion to register with Sustainable Energy Ireland as a qualified installer. It provides the knowledge and skills required for those intending to specify and install solar hot water systems.

  • Introduction to solar water heating

  • What is a solar water heating system

  • Installation of collectors
  • Hot water storage cylinders
  • Controllers and secondary components
  • Preparing to install a solar water heating system

Exam Structure
The examination will be based on a range of specific learning outcomes covering all units
The examination will be 2 hours in duration
The format of the examination will be as follows:

  • Theory based with two sections

  • Section A

    - 12 short answer questions
    - Candidates are required to answer 10 (50 marks)

  • Section B

    -
    3 structured questions
    - Candidates are required to answer 2 (50 marks)


Biomass

Aims: To up-skill candidates with the relevant knowledge and understanding of Biomass systems. This module is a statement of the standards to be achieved to gain a FETAC credit in Biomass Heating Systems at level 6.

Objective: The objective of this course is to provide a wealth of knowledge on biomass systems and to prepare candidates for the official FETAC examination which follows the course which will qualify the candidate upon successful completion to register with Sustainable Energy Ireland as a qualified installer. The Specific Learning Outcomes are grouped into 5 units:

  • Global Energy and the Utilisation of Wood Energy in Ireland and Europe
  • Characteristics of Bio-fuel
  • Stages of the Biomass Combustion Process

  • Layout of Biomass Combustion Plants
  • Economics of Biomass Heat Generation Systems
  • Legislative Requirements

Back to back solar and biomass courses have been designed to develop the skills and knowledge of plumbing and heating contractors and related trades and their employees in all aspects of the relevant technologies. Our Biomass course covers Wood Gasification Boilers.

Heat Pumps

Aims: This module is a statement of the standards to be achieved to gain a FETAC credit in Heat Pump Systems at Level 6. It is designed to provide a basis in heat pump technology and installation. It will enhance the knowledge and skills required for all those intending to install heat pumps for the heating and cooling of buildings.

Objective: The objective of this course is to provide a wealth of knowledge on heat pumps and to prepare candidates for the official FETAC examination which follows the course which will qualify the candidate upon successful completion to register with Sustainable Energy Ireland as a qualified installer. The Specific Learning Outcomes are grouped into 5 units:

  • Ecological and Economic Issues of Heat Pump Technology
  • Principles of Heat Pump Technology
  • Site Assessment, Design and Sizing of Heat Pumps
  • Heat Distribution, Integration and Controls
  • Installation and Commissioning
