Career Information

  • FETAC Level 5 qualifications are sought by most employers. It would be very difficult to attain a job without this qualification. There may be a small minority of employers that would consider an applicant that did not hold this qualification although this would be seen as an exception to the rule rather than the norm.

  • The FETAC Level 5 qualification will allow an individual to work as a Special Needs Assistant in a primary or secondary school, day care centre or crèche.

  • Work experience must be undertaken in a special needs setting with children under the age of 18 (e.g. school, crèche or day care centre) and may be in a voluntary or in a paid capacity.

  • FETAC Level 5 will provide learners with the basic practical skills (in conjunction with the relevant theory) to fulfil the role of the Special Needs Assistant. Learners will be informed of common special needs in a education setting at this level (e.g. dyslexia, asperger’s syndrome).

  • FETAC Level 6 will provide learners with more in depth theoretical information than level 5. This will include a more in depth analysis of various special needs/disabilities (e.g. autism).

  • The FETAC Level 6 will enhance the skills already gained from level 5 and will demonstrate that learner has more knowledge and experience working in a specials needs environment (better for those already working as a Special Needs Assistant).

  • Learners must have completed the Level 5 course in order to progress onto the Level 6 course.
